4) Radiohead ‘Kid A’

Radiohead have resurrected themselves many times over the past 20+ years. They could have easily been lumped in with other popular UK bands, like Oasis and Blur, during their beginning, but didn’t. While Damon Albarn had to create an alter ego group to change his sound (Gorillaz) Radiohead basically said ‘fuck you,’ and made the album THEY wanted to make. ‘Ok Computer’ was in heavy rotation for me while finishing middle school and starting high school. I thought this album was going to be the highlight of their career; lucky for me, I was totally wrong.
‘Kid A’ came out during my sophmore year of high school. After school, my Mom picked me up and drove me down the street to Newbury Comics so I could pick this up. I was so excited to hear it, I took out my Mom’s Supreme’s CD (without her permission; she wasn’t amused), and threw it on. The first organ chords combined with Yorke’s fade in/fade out vocals made me feel holy; I felt like I was surrounded by pews and incense; stain glassed windows and crucifixes. This was the album I needed in my life that year. I wasn’t much for (heck-no to) techno or dance music; I liked guitars, drums, and a bass. But this album touched on it just enough for me appreciate the grand scheme of dance, ambient, drone music. I danced to this record. I did homework to this record. I got stoned to this record (a lot). I slept to this record. I was lucky enough to see them live when ‘Amensiac’ came out. Drank whiskey, beer, and smoked a lot of pot. My buddy’s car overheated the whole drive home; we kept having to stop at various fast food restauraunts in hopes of getting buckets of water (and bear claws). It was an amazing night and an amazing show. Whenever I listen to it, (after 12 years) it still brings me back to those early high school days.
Since then, Radiohead have only made one album I didn’t really care for, which was ‘Hail To The Thief,’ but I’m hoping in the next couple of years, I’ll grow an appreciation for it; because if a band could make an album as good as ‘Kid A,’ there has to be some golden highlights in the rest of their catalog.
Song Of The Day: Oasis ‘I Hope, I Think, I Know.’ I’ve been thinking about the albums that have changed my life (Top 25 Albums That Have Changed Your Life: (#1 and #2) and I’m having trouble deciding on which Oasis album had more influence on me: ‘(What’s The Story) Morning Glory,’ or ‘Be Here Now.’ So here’s a song from the latter while I play the options around in my head. Very underrated song from their 3rd album. The ending is the perfect example of what a ‘whip it’ does to your head.

Song Of The Day: Oasis ‘Underneath The Sky.’ A song can take easily take you back to a time you once lived through. This takes me back to middle school, ordering pizza and hanging out in the music room before a choral concert. My buddy and I both had tapes and we were playing to pass the time. For some reason, he really liked buying single cassette tapes, which is something I never understood. CD’s were one thing, but tapes? Come on, man. This song was the B-Side to ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger,’ and instantly became one of my favorite songs by the band. Lucky for me he had this tape. Touche for buying tapes, my good friend.

Song Of The Day: Oasis ‘Who Feels Love?’ They were drinkers, cursers, and jackasses, but man could they write some great songs. I definitely prefer Noel’s new project over Liam’s, but good memories will always be had listening to these guys on different formats (CD and Cassette tape) during very impressionable years. I was lucky enough to see them in ‘01 (or maybe ‘02; I was smoking a lot of pot at that point in my life) with The Black Crowes. Once I saw the brothers bickering on stage, I knew I had seen a true Oasis moment. It was awesome.
